Getting other good-quality websites to link to your own site, in a genuine way, is one of the trickiest problems faced by a website owner who has puny or no budget and whose website languishes in obscurity.

Why are good links so important? It's worth retention in mind that good links are the internet equivalent of word-of-mouth recommendations. Population no ifs ands or buts take notice of independent recommendations, especially if they come from someone trusted. And we all see straight through fake ones. That's why we don't believe everything adverts tell us, but we do take notice when a good friend tells us about a goods they liked. The web is no different.

Tip: Don't waste time on other forms of promotion without first concentrating most of your efforts on link-building and ranking high on search engines.

Tip: Before leaping in, it's worth reading up about "What good links are Not" - as you'd be surprised how easy it can be to mistake them for a good idea, and waste time and money chasing them.

Of course, ideally, you want your site to be so great and splendid that Population all over the web are linking to you spontaneously. But in reality, if your site is brand new or tucked away in some lonely corner of the web, you're going to have to work hard at encouraging and coaxing good links. That's where the lines in the middle of good links and bad links can become blurred, as it's often hard to know how on earth to get a no ifs ands or buts good-quality link without having to pay for it.

Remember: A good-quality link happens when somebody is linking to your site because they no ifs ands or buts think it's cool and want others to know about it. So how do you do that? Here are some ideas:

A favour - request for a reciprocal link is no good, because each link cancels the other out. So in return for a link to your site, you have to offer something else (and not cash!). That something has to be connected to what your site offers or provides. So, for instance, I might offer to critique their website for free as a demonstration of the kind of service I provide. Without being too pushy I might mention that this is all part of how I promote my site and that whatever who's happy with my free critique is more than welcome to link back to my site or mention it on their blog if they feel the urge. A web publicity stunt - Population on the web love novelty. It doesn't last, but the links that it creates do. I stumbled upon a storm of web publicity once by accident, and it generated thousands of links to one of my sites (an art site), some of which were from some of the most popular sites on the net. I made a Christmas present for my younger brother. It was a set of Russian Matryoshka dolls that I painted to look like characters from Star Wars. As an after-thought, I posted them up in the blog section of my site, and it got a huge response. So think of something that's connected to what you do. Something marvelous or cool. Make a video, or post it up. Then see what happens. You might like to familiarize bookmarking sites like digg.com or reddit. Just this morning I was recommended a link to someone who had made a printer out of Lego, using a felt-tip for the ink head. It was a cool video, and it's just the kind of thing that Population tell each other about. Create other capability sites - It may seem counter-intuitive, but sometimes, owning other websites can no ifs ands or buts be a boost. And of course, you can give yourself a ringing endorsement, but only after you have proven your authority on the subject. Building a simple facts site on a very specific niche branch doesn't have to take long. The fabricate needn't be complex (take this one for example). It's the facts that's of traditional concern. Think about a business website that sells a wide range of electronic gadgets. Trying to fit lots of articles into an already crowded shop site might not be very clever or useful. But if the owner were to generate a specific niche facts website all about one singular type of gadget, e.g. Mp3 players, then she'd have a much best occasion of reaching Population who no ifs ands or buts are seeking some assistance. By helping them out in an informational way, it's a fairly right send process of mentioning that the guess you're such an specialist on Mp3 players is because it's your job to sell them. "And here's a puny link to my shop..." By proving your authority, and not just hitting Population with a sales pitch, you can win the trust of your readers and offer them a way to purchase what they need. Answer people's questions - If you are an authority on something connected to your website, then show off your knowledge (but in a definite way). Whilst spam commenting is Not the way to go, you can do a lot of good with a bit of know-how. Population in any place are request for help. On forums, in blogs, on sites such as Yahoo's "Answers". Why not join a small handful of them and offer your help. Don't just shamelessly plug your website. Don't even mention it directly. Simply address the person's ask as helpfully and as authoritatively as possible. Then, if the website allows, include a modest link or mention of your site in your signature. Sign off something like this: "I hope that helps, and good luck! Matt Brown [the name of my website]". You'd be surprised how fast you can gain respect, Simply by being respectfully helpful. Credit links - If you already offer a service or goods that other website owners are using, you might like to offer it for free or at a discounted rate, if they supply a footnote link at the lowest of their pages. This is something web designers commonly do. It's a reputation link, and it demonstrates that a website thinks very adequate of you to have no ifs ands or buts used your services. Offer a cool prize - possibly you want a new motto for your website, or would like ideas for a new product. Companies can always use capability input from their customer base in one form or another. So why not offer a juicy prize for the best entrant? taste blogs or news sites that are connected to your niche and let them know about your competition. "Since your site covers gadgets, I was wondering whether your readers might be curious in knowing that we are running a competition at the occasion to fabricate a new advert for our latest product. The prize is a free Mp3 player..." With any luck, if the blogger no ifs ands or buts thinks this will be of interest to his readers, he might give you a mention in his next post. And you can use this same competition to taste as many different websites as you wish.
